Now that you have mastered the basics of searching in EBSCOHost 2.0, Canadian Student Research Centre or Kids Search
you are ready to become a power user. We have filtered through and selected support materials for some of the advanced
features for each search interface that we think are most useful.

How can I refine my search?
Below, you will find links to tutorials and handouts on how to do an advanced search for each interface.
These resources are excellent tools for you and your students to use to learn how to conduct more refined searches.

Support Materials

General Tips:
- EBSCOhost Tips: This tip sheet answers basic search questions such as: How do I use Quotation Marks in EBSCOhost? etc.
- Improve your search results.pdf When you receive a message that no results were found, you may want to refine your search terms by trying the suggestions provided on the Search Screens or listed here.
For Power Users:
- Choose Databases.pdf EBSCOhost allows you to select the databases you want to search. You can select by database name(s) (e.g. MasterFILE Premier) or by subject area (e.g. Communications / Media).
- Subjects People and Places Browse.pdf Provides a list of subjects or subject terms for a specific database. When searching multiple databases, several subject lists may appear in the drop-down list.
- Video Search.pdf Videos can also be searched using the Images/Video Search Screen.
- Image Quick View.pdf Image Quick View provides thumbnails of the images in an article in the EBSCOhost Result List, Citation View, or the Folder.
- Indexes.pdf From More at the top of the EBSCOhost screen click the Indexes link. When searching multiple databases, choose the Index you want to search. Then select a field (e.g. Author) from the drop-down list and enter your search term.

 Canadian Student Research Centre Grades 5-9
Search screens* available with the Canadian Student Research Centre (CSRC) include Basic Search,
Advanced Search and Visual Search. The default is always the Basic Search Screen. This interface supports
students and prepares them for the transition to EBSCOhost as their studies become progressively more academic.
- Advanced Search-Guided.pdf A step by step guide to refining you search by using more than one search field.
- Search by topic.pdf In the Basic or Advanced Search Screen, click on a topic in the Search by Topic column. A list of subtopics will appear on the right side of your screen.
- Search by source type.pdf You can search within a specific source type. For example, you may want to limit your search terms to only results found only in Magazines or Newspapers.
- Publications Browse.pdf You can see the names of magazines and journals in the Database Information & Title Lists Screen by clicking the Title List link.

The advanced features in Kids Search are relatively simple to use. It is a good interface to introduce
advanced searching and clustered results.

How can I save and manage my searches?
A personal account let’s you save search results, persistent links to searches, saved searches, search alerts,
journal alerts and web pages to your personal folder. Depending on the interface you are using, use the links below
to learn how to set up and manage your personal folders.
EBSCOhost

- Save Search.pdf You can set up a personal account to use to save searches, retrieve and reuse them, and print them as needed.
- Personal Account.pdf A personal account let’s you save search results, persistent links to searches, saved searches, search alerts, journal alerts and web pages to your personal folder.
- Use Folders.pdf Folders enable you to collect results to use later.
- Managing Custom folders.pdf Custom folders let you create many topic folders where results can be sorted and stored.
- Share Folders.pdf Shared folders allow you to add articles to your custom folders and share them with other EBSCOhost users.
- Accept Shared Folder.pdf You will receive an e-mail invitation to a folder when a user wants to share his or her search results with you. To access the shared folder, you must log into EBSCOhost and "accept" that folder using the passcode included in the e-mail invitation.

- Personal Account.pdf You can use your personal account to save your search results.
- Using Folders.pdf You have your own personal area (folder) to collect and store information that you want the next time you log in to Canadian Student Research Centre.

Kids Search

- Personal Account.pdf Your account gives you your own My Kids Search folder to collect and keep the information you find.
- Using Folders.doc You can create folders to help you manage and organize your research. You can group your saved articles and images by topic, project, or class.

How can I be alerted to new articles?
Whether you are interested in a favourite hobby or have a specific interest, staying current with
journal and subject alerts is easy.

- Journal Alerts Set-up.pdf You can set up an e-mail alert to automatically notify you each time a new issue for a selected journal title is available.
- What is RSS.pdf An RSS feed reader alerts you when new articles on topics you’re interested in are available.
- One Step RSS Journal If you prefer to view your search or journal alerts via an RSS reader, one-step alerts offer a quick and easy way to obtain the alert feed, which can be copied into your RSS reader.
- Save Search Alerts.pdf You can save advanced searches as alerts and have EBSCOhost e-mail you with any new results.
- Search Journal Alerts.ppt An overview of how to create search and journal alerts.
