Background InformationEducational Resource Acquisition Consortium (ERAC) is an association of BC public school districts overseen by an Executive Committee and working together on software, video and learning resource acquisition and evaluation. ERAC also oversees a novel evaluation process, resulting in its ever-expanding catalogue of English and French novels BC evaluators have recommended for classroom use. ERAC offers educators the opportunity to attend workshops, held around the province, where ERAC’s trained facilitators conduct resource-specific training for products purchased through ERAC. From time to time, the Ministry of Education contracts with ERAC to provide evaluations of learning resources for specific curricula. When ERAC has completed its evaluations, it forwards the list of its recommendations to the Ministry, so that the Ministry can consider the resources for Ministry Recommended status. By working as a consortium, school districts save on staff time --for evaluating needs, comparing and evaluating products and negotiating deals-- and are able to leverage lower prices for learning resources, software and supplementary videos. ERAC was formed in 2003 in a partnership between school districts and the Ministry of Education. In 2005, ERAC moved out of the Ministry of Education offices in Victoria and into the Vancouver School Board’s administrative office. At the time, ERAC assumed full responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the consortium. In 2005 it invited independent schools to join ERAC as associate members. ERAC is funded through Ministry of Education support and ERAC membership fees.
