Every year, ERAC invites distributors to submit recent English and French videos to ERAC. ERAC arranges for K-12 specialty teachers and teacher-librarians to receive training in evaluating videos. Evaluators work in pairs following a list of criteria to evaluate the videos. Typically, about 20 percent of the submitted videos are determined to have a high enough match with the criteria to be included in ERAC’s video collection. Evaluations take place in four BC regions: Prince George, Victoria, Kelowna and Vancouver/Surrey. ERAC posts the collection on its website in February and then opens the ordering period for about four weeks in March/April and again in October. ERAC then processes the orders and ships the videos to districts, complete with complimentary MARC records. Videos are discounted and come with free shipping and handling. In 2006 the Vancouver Sun published a story about the use of videos in classrooms. The story described ERAC's video evaluation process and quoted ERAC representative Judith Kootte, and ERAC evaluator, Surrey teacher Gary McLaughlin. It also included information about how schools and school districts can ensure that the videos teachers show are licensed. Of course videos purchased through the ERAC catalogue include the appropriate licensing. Please click here to read the story. |
